Honour to the Mothers…

Join me today on Mothering Sunday to honour all mothers!  Take a moment to give thanks, remember, raise a glass (if that’s your thing), do a Bhangra move (now that’s my thing!) as we celebrate mothers!

Let’s celebrate mothers wherever they are located…  the warriors, the overcomers, the trail blazers, the survivors, the advocates, the visionaries, the pioneers, the (stained) glass ceiling breakers, and so so many more… add your own to this list.  I give thanks for those with the ‘mothering' spirit – the surrogate mothers - who may never have had a child themselves, yet who have been there for us.

Let’s also remember those mothers for whom today is a difficult day… those who have lost their mother; those who have lost their child through death or miscarriage; those who are struggling with infertility; those who are facing the heartache of delayed adoption or fostering; those who are step-mothers in blended families; those who never knew their mother; those who are feeling the ache of an empty nest… let’s hold them in our hearts and prayers.

Today, I celebrate my 93 year old mother, Mohinder Kaur.  She travelled from Punjab to this country and faced many challenges and barriers as a woman and as an immigrant.  Yet, neither the climate (I’m talking weather here!), racial hostility or relentless obstacles overwhelmed or fazed her, or kept her from moving forward.

Mom is a remarkable fearless, courageous, tenacious, truth speaking, open minded, generous hearted illiterate wise woman - who sacrificed everything to put a bowl of daal and roti before us – like so many mothers.  She welcomed strangers into the house, as if they were angels sent by God, and served them with the very best of what she had.  These days however, her dementia often takes her to other places and into other conversations the rest of us don’t always recognise, nevertheless her independent spirit remains.  Mom, I honour you today with ladoos (fyi - round balls of deliciousness made from flour, sugar and ghee!) which I know you still enjoy, and of course, a Bhangra move, which I know you would just love!!

Let’s honour all (those who have been like) our Mothers in similarly befitting ways…(got to go, I hear a beat…)!
