Advent 2023

My senses are overwhelmed by what I see and hear on the news… wars, rumours of wars, kidnappings, mass assassinations, raw injustice, indifference, despair, uncertainty.   Covid 19 enquiries… disturbing (but unsurprising) accounts, counter narratives prevail, the name of the game appears to be lie through your teeth and cover your own back or closer still, ‘knives out’ and everyone for themselves!  What do we hold on to?  What is the truth?

In the midst of this all, I’m looking for a message that has stood the test of time.  I’m looking for a message that is unswayed by human sentiment, bias, or ego; nationalism, political colours or prejudice.  I’m looking for a message that is welcoming, hospitable, accepting, encouraging, consistent, engaging, barrier-breaking, boundary demolishing and bridge-building.

I am so grateful for the season of Advent, with its clear manifesto themes of hope, peace, joy and love to the world.  There’s no second guessing here, no uncertainty, no lack of generosity, exclusivity, north-south divides, reinforced borders and unhealthy boundaries.

As we journey through Advent, we are sign posted towards Christmas day and the reminder that even in the midst of uncertainty, hostility and inhospitality the greatest prize is fixed and available to all, no inspired guessing required.  Hope is certain, peace is promised, joy is released and love is embodied. In such times… God knows we need them all!

We too are called to embody these themes even if others abandon or desert them.  Let Advent be your key to the greatest gift of all.

Happy Christmas to you all!
